Ratatosk was humming. She was in a rather happy mood. She had a song stuck in her head that she put there. Ratatosk, on break, had been 'Call of Dutying it up' as her gaurdian had put it. She had been playing Call of Duty Black Ops so much, that she had actually started getting nervous when she saw planes in the sky. So on behalf of herself...and the planes...she decided to not play it for a while and focus on her school work, which has been slipping since her new hobby had been dominating most of her time.
She had found that she enjoyed a certain song on this game that she was singing it everyday. So to still have that comfortable feeling of being home, and NOT be playing her new drug she sung it every chance she got.
Ratatosk sat down at a table and begun to eat, humming the entire time. At a different table someone had found something to be quite amusing and laughed loudly. It made her jump, scaring her, and instinctively tried to aim down the sights...without a gun... She shook her head and blushed for the silliness and hoped no one saw.

The fact Gabriel hadn't really set the knowledge of separate 'House' tables in to his brain. He supposed he had noticed the Houses usually sat together, but for the most part, he didn't really care. The table nearest him at the moment would likely be the Slytherin table. Wearily, he sat down, putting down a battered messenger bag.
What was she doing? He gave the girl only a passing glance, then tried to focus on his food. The Ravenclaw found it more difficult than one would have thought. The hamburger steak on his plate seemed suddenly unappetizing, oozing juices as it did. For a moment the world shifted under him, and he turned his head away, pushing the plate across the table in a jarring moment that knocked a few fries off the plate.
After a few seconds of shallow breathing, he swallowed the taste of bile in his throat and took a drink of water.
What. The Hell. He squeezed his eyes shut, biting his lip. Gabriel Taylor Adams had never been squeamish. He lived and breathed a life of horror, and he had always liked it that way. Had one little encounter with a vampire really changed his lifestyle that much? The boy resisted the urge to laugh. A little encounter. Hell, he had been her blood source for too long, and now he couldn't even ….
“Hi.”
He forced himself to look up at her, to talk. Anything to draw his mind away from the problem he now faced. His brain, the way he thought, would not let him think. So, he turned to the strange girl with her strange actions, and forced a small smile.
He was not going to be a god damned vegetarian because a damned vampire had ruined his life.

Ratatosk blushed as the boy sat down at the table she was at. She pleaded with her gods that he didn't see her trying to aim down the sights without a gun. She noticed he wasn't of the same house as she was. Ravenclaw? She hadn't really learned the houses yet. She had only interacted with two others in the entire school. She felt shocked when he spoke to her.
"H...hi! I...I'm Ratatosk." She stammered, blushing deep red. "You're a Ravenclaw right?"
For a split second she wished she had kept her mouth shut. She was never really good at speaking to people of the opposite gender. Ratatosk was very shy and socially awkward. And to top it all off she was naive about almost everything thrown in her way, making her awkwardness a more prominent feature in her personality. Talking to people wasn't her forte, but she loved meeting new people. It didn't matter if they were missing and eye and half an arm or whatever, she liked new people. Ratatosk was very open-hearted and instantly loved anyone who she met, and trusted them equally.
She had noticed that he looked a little sick. There was food in front of him. That called back memories for her. The first time she ate at the school...
"Are you okay? Is it the food?" She felt some how, responsible for his nauseasness. "Is there anything I can do?"
He's...really pretty.... Ratatosk blushed slightly, when she noticed how blue his eyes were. Blue. That was her favorite color for eyes. She smiled timidly.

She turned bright red.
Well.
He hadn't had that reaction in awhile. It would have been amusing if it weren't so sad. He looked like shit, and he wasn't saying that in one of those dumb 'aw, I look like crap' people. No. He looked downright terrible. Tired, a mess. Maybe better than he had been looking, but still pretty much like shit.
"Yeah."
Ratatosk. An unusual name, but nothing stranger than the other names he had heard here.
He had the definite feeling she was uncomfortable, although he couldn't be sure why. Looking at her posed a problem, his new found, dumb personality traits getting in the way.
To make his life less awkward he had taken a small potion. It had cleared up most of the weariness, and made the gash on his throat near invisible. There was just one problem.
It made his eyes blue.
Gabriel had no problem with blue eyes, but it did make his existence rather awkward. After all, anyone he met for the first time - like this girl - would be confused next time they met. Anyone who had known Gabriel previously would remember the original color.
Which was not blue.
"I'm Gabriel."
See, it's not hard. Introductions - god why was she so red, what was he doing wrong? He picked at his food.
"I'm fine. No, don't worry about it." Why was she so concerned? What the hell. "I just didn't sleep well."

Ratatosk fought hard to compose herself.
Didn't sleep well... Ratatosk echoed the answer in her mind. She knew he was hiding something...she wanted to ask what was REALLY wrong, but remembered that it was impolite to pry, and that he would've told her if he wanted her to know...so she started messing with a braid in her hair.
"I guess...not sleeping well makes someone feel sick..." Ratatosk answered. She decided to change the subject. "Uhm...uh...How old...are you?"
She shifted in her seat uncomfortably. Inside she beat herself up for asking such a stupid question. She felt the heat rush to her face, and the looked down at the table again. She felt like she was going to make him run away screaming.

Gabriel could barely think, he was hungry yet he didn't want to eat. It was silly. What was wrong with her, why did she look so upset? Had he .. done something wrong? The Ravenclaw tried not to frown, but it was difficult. Silly, silly, what had he done?
Her questions seemed to be random, beyond small talk and just desperate for conversation. Or maybe she really was just that flustered. It would have been funny if it weren't a bit sad. The Ravenclaw almost answered 'sixteen', but then realized he'd had a birthday since then.
Well. He hadn't really thought about it a lot, since his birthday.
"Seventeen."
The legal age in the wizarding world. He could -
Well. He could go to Azkaban. Hell, he would have gone there anyway for the things he had done, underage or not. It didn't matter. They were bad, terrible things.
Right?
A half smile. "You're a Slytherin, right? You don't seem quite ... fit in with this crowd." He glanced around, knowing a Slytherin's reputation for snarky, sarcastic comments and a bit of sadism. Somebody had told him he was better suited to that house, but he ways weren't for his own pleasure. There was a science to it, to anyone who had been able to watch.

"Oh! I'm 16." Ratatosk said, hoping that he wouldn't leave.
She flinched when he mentioned that she wasn't anything like a Slytherin should be. She knew...and she was sure that all the other Slytherins knew too. Ratatosk had immediately felt out of place as soon as she was sorted into the Slytherin house. She also noticed how the other girls voices had matured...but she still sounded like a child...and she even noticed the looks she gets when she talks.
"Yeah...I know, I'm not an evil monster like all the others...well...there's another person like me, but...no wait...he's kinda mean too..." Ratatosk sighed, a little distressed as her last line of defense fell to a dead halt, her friend had brutally killed his own brother a few months ago, and she hadn't seen him since...well she ought not to have expected it, she was kind of the reason he had to kill his brother in the first place.
Unwillingly, the entire scene replayed in her mind, like a bad b-rated movie stuck on repeat in the same spot, forcing her to watch the horror over and over again. She was far from being over it, but her playing Call of Duty seemed to be her vent. She could shoot her friends brother over and over again, pretending that she was the one who had killed him.
She shook her head, as if to chase the daydream away. She remembered Gabriel, the pretty blue eyed boy, sitting in front of her. She felt the heat start to rush to her face but she managed to keep the flush from appearing. She couldn't seem to understand why, whenever she looked at him, he made her feel even more flustered than normal. Like she couldn't piece together a coherent thought, or much less get the thought to form the words. Ratatosk felt like she would forget to breathe if she didn't mentally check all of her vital signs before continuing.
"I'm not even sure why I was placed in this house to begin with, for starters...I don't even have any friends in this house...my only two friends fell off the face of the earth a long time ago...so I'm just kinda here..." Ratatosk smiled a very small smile, and there was absolutely no way she was going to tell him her other terrible secret.
She stopped babbling for a minute. Ratatosk looked him full in the face for the first time since he sat down at the table. She felt her heart stop and her breathing had ceased as well, but she forced them to start working again. She noticed that there was something different about him... a secret.
He's mysterious. She let out a tiny sigh and felt her face get warm, and her heart started to beat erratically, and her breathing became uneven.
