It was a beautiful fall day, or it would have been back in England. Here in Spain it was too warm to be Fall, though the calender said November, none the less.
In the distance a weird buzzing could be heard, something quiet a few people at the school might never have heard -at least on school grounds- before. The buzzing soon grew louder till it was unmistakable. Someone was driving a motorized scooter up to the castle.
Soon the girl came into sight. She had long curly black hair that flowed from beneath her red sparkly helmet. On the back of the scooter was strapped her trunk, it looked small but it had six locks on it, clearly indicating that it's amount of content should not be taken for granted.
The girl stopped, just inside the Arch and turning off the engine of the scooter, parked it on the inside edge of the wall. Tapping it handlebars with her wand and murmuring some protection and grounding spells, the person made sure her transportation could not be stolen or even moved save by herself.
Then she undid her helmet and looked around. Her Da' had told her this would be the last school she'd be moved to. That meant she'd graduate from here. Firefox U, talk about ironic. She laughed easily, as if she were used to things tickling her fancy.

Nadia had just gotten a disturbing letter from her mother:
Dear Nadia,
How are you settling in? Have you made any friends yet? I hope so. I know you'll do great. A school like Firefox will really help you hone your talents. I'm so proud of you. I never suspected we had a witch in the family, but I'm glad we do.
Just so you know, dear, your father called. I told him you were studying abroad this year. He's doing a series on European cities and is going to be filming in Barcelona sometime in early December. He wants to meet up with you, since I told him you were attending a boarding school in Spain. He still doesn't know about your talents, sweetie, and if I were you, I wouldn't let him catch on.
I loved your father dearly, but he's...well, he wouldn't understand. I think your powers might frighten him. If you choose to meet him in Barcelona, be very careful. Don't give anything away.
I love you Sweetheart, and I know you'll do the right thing.
Love, Mom
Nadia had taken to carrying the paper around with her, all the better to freak out about it, after all. In fact, she was reading it yet again when she bumped into someone. Literally. She looked at the person.
It was just a little girl. And, wait, was that a...scooter?
"Sweet! How do you get that to work out here? I mean, my watch is basically useless now, and I left my iPod at home, so I wouldn't screw it up like the last one." However, in her wonder at seeing the scooter, Nadia had dropped her letter. It went fluttering about in the light breeze, and Nadia tried, and failed to catch it before it drifted out of reach.
"Oh, man! That had dad's contact information on it. How am I gonna write him now?"

Once the strange man in a skirt had had walked up then turned around and walked away, the girl with the scooter introduced herself to the girl who just lost her letter.
"Hi there, my name is Selene." Selene smiled at the girl and held out her hand for a handshake. "Don't worry about your letter, I'll summon it for you." She quickly got out her wand, from her knee high black sneaker-boots.
"Accio Letter!" the letter quickly zipped back into Selene's hands, then she handed over to her new acquaintance.
"There you go, now hang onto it if it's that important to you, you don't want to lose it again. As for my scooter," she continued patting soft leather seat, "It's bewitched to work without fuel, my dad got it for me, from Japan. He's good at getting things, and not just for me."
Selene's eyebrows knotted, and she looked at her fellow student curiously.
"You didn't look all that happy about something as you were walking up. Wanna talk about it? I've heard people say I'm a pretty good listener- "

Nadia was perplexed by the suddne appearance and disappearance of the blond man, but she didn't say anything about it. Was this kid offering a handshake? Strange kid. Nadia shook it anyway. "Nadia." She gave the girl her name, but her mind was still on her letter, until Selene summoned it for her. "Oh, uh, thanks. I probably should have thought of that myself, but I'm not really use to the whole magic thing yet, though I should be. To tell the truth, life would be a lot easier if I weren't a witch at all."
And, before she knew it, she was blabbing everything to what was basically a stranger, although hopefully a sympathetic one. "My parents aren't magic. My big sister isn't magic. My dad gets me stuff from around the world too; he's the host of a muggle tv travel show, and he's shooting in Barcelona next week, and he wants to see me. Did I mention that he has no idea that I'm a witch, because my parents got divorced when I was like three? So, like I have to figure out how to mail him back without using owls, and how to get out of meeting him, because I really hate the idea of lying to him."
Nadia's cheeks went a little pink, as she realized, that once again, she'd probably given too much information. It was a bad habit of hers, she had like practically no filter between her brain and her mouth.

Nodding sympathetically, Selene began to think carefully before answering.
"There's a big difference between the truth and telling it," she said after a moment. "Write him and tell him you are very busy with school, that the work is challenging. You can't meet him this time because you have lots of homework that you need to get to. Say your sorry to disappoint him but good grades are important to you. To be quiet honest if all of that isn't true, well, lets just say your opportunities will be a lot slimmer once you do graduate." With the 'good student' speech out of the way, Selene grew even graver.
"As for not wanting to be magic, wow, that's one big complaint! I don't know what to say. But my advice - if you really want it- is to find something to like about it, then run with it! There used to be a Ministry Job where you deal with muggle artifacts all day, not sure if they still have it but they should. If you like animals we have some interesting ones, many that are pretty harmless. The only reason I suggest sucking it up is because if you marry you are more likely to have magic kids than non-magic ones, might be harder for them if you don't embraced magic while you have the chance." Selene signed and her eyebrows un-knit themselves and she smiled.
"But really it's all up to you, you know? The only person you have to live with is yourself. Look in a mirror, that is the only person you have to impress and the only one who has to still like you at the end of the day."

Had this tiny girl just given her a lecture? For real?
Strange kid. Far too grown up for her age.
Suddenly, Nadia felt a little sorry for this girl. Obviously, her life couldn't have been all that great, because no normal kid would have given simultaneous lectures about keeping grades up and the value of honesty and bearing one's problems without complaint like that. A normal kid, at hearing Nadia's ramblings would have said something like, 'yeah, that really sucks' while looking at Nadia like a weirdo because she was apparently physically unable to keep her thoughts to herself.
"I, uh...yeah," said Nadia, not sure if she would take Selene's advice, after all. "Well, the problem is, that if I tell him that I can't go to Barcelona because I'm focused on school, then he might want to visit me at school. So that he can see me without interrupting my studying." Not that her dad would buy her skipping out on a trip to Barcelona to study anyway. Although he was seldom at home, he knew enough about her to know that she was an indifferent student at best.
"Maybe it's best just to go and see him, let him know I'm alive and well, and then come back. But, what if he asks me what I'm studying? Maybe I ought to mail Mom back and ask her to cover for me. But, I really want to see him. He always has the best stories and sometimes he even brings me presents. Besides, I haven't seen him in person for almost a year. Last Christmas, to be exact..." Nadia trailed off as she realized that she was thinking aloud again.
"I'm sorry, I know it's not really your problem. I just, I don't know. Mom says the filter between my brain and my mouth is broken, but sometimes, I think I might not have one at all. Ooooh, and I'm doing it again. I'm sorry." Nadia covered her mouth with one hand in embarrassment, as her face went completely pink. She couldn't believe how much she babbled. She really hated that about herself.

Nadia seemed weirded out by Selene's advice but Selene shrugged. Everyone had their opinions. She liked being helpful, where it was wanted. But if it wasn't, no biggie.
"Well if you go you'll have to lie about a few things at the least, it's up to you really. As for you're, um, speaking dilemma, it's easy to change things about yourself with practice. Personally I like trying to help people solve problems, you and I might be come good friends."
She laughed lightly at this, knowing Nadia might be too weirded out to be friends now. Oh well, there was someone who would like her Selene was sure. There was always at least one or two.
Selene turned and unstrapped her small trunk from the motor scooter. It wasn't too heavy so grasping both handles she lifted it off and then smiled again at Nadia. "Do you know where I'm supposed to go first? The flier said something about a sorting and a 'House'. I was in Salem Preparatory before this, we had girls and boys dorms but not Houses."
Post by Nadia Fairchild on Dec 5, 2010 19:28:04 GMT -5
She was from Salem? Interesting, she was American then, which she'd guessed from the accent, but it was nice to have proof. Nadia had never attended Salem, although she'd met kids that had. Nadia's first magic school had been a small school in California. There had only been about fifty students total, and classes tended to have only about ten students at a time, if that many.
Nadia had transferred to Firefox hoping to not only see the world like her father, but also because she wanted to experience a bigger school. Her old school had felt cramped and cloying. And far too much time was spent of learning theory, and sitting still, and memorizing incantations, and not nearly enough time was spent actually doing magic.
"Yeah, maybe we could be friends..." Nadia found herself liking this girl despite, or maybe because of, her strangeness and sanctimonious nature. She was a quirky, precocious little creature, wasn't she? "They haven't sorted you yet? My letter had me sorted already, but maybe it's different for different people. But, yeah, I can help. Follow me, I guess. I mean, if you want to."

Nadia's comment reminded Selene of the strange extra envelope inside the original. She got the letter out from her pocket and got out the extra envelop. There where it had once said 'Don't Open Until You Reach Firefox University', it now read; 'Welcome, Gryffindor!'
Despite her Salem education this surprised even Selene, who showed the envelope to Nadia then quickly opened it. Inside was a map of the school with Gryffindor Tower and the Feasting Hall especially noted.
"Well I'll be," said Selene in a whisper, "That's pretty darn nifty." Then she looked up at Nadia. "Sure I'll follow you, but how about a change of plans? Could we get a bite to eat? That ride from the Train made me pretty hungry."
Post by Nadia Fairchild on Dec 11, 2010 19:10:09 GMT -5
Nadia smiled. "Gryffindor? That's the same house I'm in! This is going to be great. It'll be so nice to have someone in classes that I actually know. I mean, I know you're probably not a fifth year like me, but the classes around here are usually mixed with all years. I haven't been to that many of them, actually, but they seem really great so far. Anyway, I can definitely show you the feasting hall. It's not all that hard to find, actually. It's a big part of the school, and it's right by the front door, on the other side of the entrance hall."
She stopped talking for a moment to take a breath and hold the door open for Selene. "After we get something to eat, how about I show you where the common room is? That way you can put your stuff away, and then maybe I can show you some more stuff, like the library, and where the classrooms are, and the quidditch field. Would that be okay with you? Because I know I totally have like this tendency to like, talk too much without listening, and like I don't know, maybe you're tired and want to lie down after we eat."
Nadia was being her usual cheerful, bubbly self, and she hoped Selene appreciated it. Or at least appreciated her honesty. Nadia's capacity to keep thoughts to herself was right about zero. "Sometimes, people say I talk too much, or that I'm like rude or whatever, because I always say what I mean, and I don't always think about how I say it. Just know that I totally don't mean to be rude. I was just taught as a child that if you thought or felt something or if you had an opinion to express, you should just say it, because, like, some folks are always going to be offended, no matter what you do, and it's really best to just tell the truth, which, again, is the whole problem with the dad situation I was talking about before. If I stay here, I have to lie and make up an excuse, and if I go, I'm going to have to lie to him too.
"So, okay, the feasting hall is this way," she pointed to the doors that lead to it, "And those stairs," she pointed again, "Go up to the rest of the school, and eventually, our common room. So, yeah, I'll show you that all later. Have you got any idea what you want to eat? I happen to know that the house elves make really good vegetarian dishes, if you're into that sort of thing."

Giggling quietly to herself, Selene listened to the older girl, she hadn't meant to try and advise someone so much older than her, she'd just imagined Nadia was tall or something.
"A tour sounds great, but I think this map has me covered. If you wanna hang out, though that would be cool. It must be nice to be in fifth year and have your schooling almost over." Selene managed to get this in between when Nadia was taking her breaths, a feat in and of itself.
"I don't think your rude at all, maybe a bit of a quick talker, but Auction Houses love those people, my dad has a few of them in his company, Accio." Selene was beginning to like this older girl despite it being tough to get a word in edgewise.
"I eat my greens and meat alike but I really like fruits, cakes and breads best. I wonder if they have Bread fruit here. I've always wanted to try it. Knickerbocker Glory is my favorite dessert."
