As she was only technically on a class assignment and not in actual class, Natalie didn't see the need to wear her class robes. After all, the heat outside was sweltering - no, unless she wanted to shrivel up and die from the sun like a raisin, Natalie wouldn't wear her robes. In a t-shirt, khaki shorts and with Caspar hanging around her neck like a bizarre, thick scarf, Natalie sprinted across the lawn of the University. She had noticed that most other students wore robes and had quickly realized that her muggle clothes weren't that ordinary. Therefore she did attract some attention, or perhaps they were just curious.
Being new wasn't something Natalie was used to. Indeed, the looks made her slow and shift her attention to her feet, a behavior she rarely indulged in. Normally the attention would have made her glow with delight, but now she wanted to avoid it. Everything was so strange here.
Including but not limited to the massive creatures in the pen there by the lake. Natalie's breath caught in her throat at the sight of them. Despite the term 'purplish gray', Natalie had been expecting something more in the hue of violet. After all, they were magic or something. Still, although the color was a bit of a disappointment, they were fantastic creatures. It would be rather interesting to try and feed them from the end of a broom, as stated, but not nearly as interesting as actually having to capture one and extract the powdered horn.
If Natalie wasn't slightly worried her wand would explode in her hand, she might have given it a go. As it were, she would settle for feeding those massive creatures. The first year drew closer and made a small squeaking sound. She hadn't realized they were so large, despite what the book had said. Half a ton. How much was in a ton? Natalie had only seen cows a handful of times and these beasts seemed much more ... terrifying.
But what she wouldn't give to bury her hands in that wooly mane.
With a resigned sigh, Natalie fetched the broom that lay on the ground alongside the fence. Could she fly on it? Probably not. But she was supposed to. She hadn't yet tried flying, although she had been informed by a rather uptight third year on the way to the castle that yes, brooms could be used for flight. Perhaps she could spear food on the end of the broom and hold it over the fence?
The first chewed her lip. Only her first assignment and she was going to fail miserably, all because she didn't know how to fly. Why was the herd so far away? Why couldn't they be closer, so she could just perhaps reach through the fence and feed them? The book had said nothing about fangs, had it?
Still holding the broom and feeling foolish, Natalie stared into the pen. Maybe someone else would show up and help her - No. She was Natalie Lewter, and she could do this by herself. Without help.
Maybe.
