James was a man on a mission. As in Triangle Tunnel, someone had cast yet another Dark Mark in Drakborough, disrupting the general populace and causing headaches for all Ministry officials. And since James was in charge of Drakborough operations, he was the one with the migraine. The circumstances in this case were really no different as before. Someone cast the Mark, and ran away. What made it different was the fact that this mark looked like the one belonging to the Shadow Society. Whats more it possibly belonged to a different sect of the Shadows, meaning that everyone would have a fresh wave of headaches if something wasn't done. And this is why James was at Firefox University attending the masquerade ball.
He knew of one man that could tell him of offshoots of the main Shadow Society. That man was currently teaching Transfiguration at Firefox and his name was Syrus Korodin, formerly of the Shadow Society. James knew that Korodin headed his own sect within the Society, but not its name, or even its function. After the Shdow War, James had had the good fortune to be in Joker's Bar one fine evening while a wayward member of the Society had been there. He was what you might call a grunt, or even a flunky, and he had been spectacularly drunk while lamenting the fall of the Shadows. This made it extraordinarily easy to take him elsewhere and interrogate him. The man didn't know much, but what he did know, James had filed away for later use, while "taking care" of the Shadow. That particular Society member was currently wandering the Spanish countryside, without a clue as to who he was.
So he attended the masquerade, and he intended to speak with Korodin of the existence of any other Shadow sects. James was done up like the Spirit* and following him were Reka and Alexan. He stopped walking and addressed them both. "Alright, go on and find some students on the Ministry's side. Convince them to apply for internships at the MLE. That'll keep Plutus off our backs until we can find out who cast the Mark." Almost as a second thought, he pulled Alexan aside and whispered into his ear. He looked him in the eye and said, "Understand?" Alex nodded once. "Good." With that James left them, making his way through throngs of people towards the staff table, the best place to start his search. As he half-danced, half-walked his way there, he couldn't help but be a bit envious of all the happy students around him. They hadn't a care in the world, did they? All they had to worry about at this moment was their date and not tripping over their own feet and the possibility of snogging later in the night.
From where he was he could see the staff table, and he could see that there was nobody there, nobody that looked like Korodin. He could hardly see past the people surrounding him in all directions. How was he going to find Korodin in all this? He muttered, "Bugger this," and wrenched a third year student from his date and asked him, "Right then, squire, you seen Professor Korodin?" The boy, bewildered and just a bit frightened answered him, "S-sure. I saw him a couple of minutes ago." As everyone was in masks, James was a little doubtful, "Are you sure?" The student became somewhat indignant, "Sure I'm sure. No mistaking anyone else for him. Bloke's downright spooky." James produced two galleons from his pocket. "Here you go. I want you to go find him for me, and if you do I'll give you eight more." The student, now obviously pleased, forgot all about his date and said "Alright, sir. I'll go get him for you."
James waited for him to come back, all the while enduring an icy glare from the boy's date.
