It was night. A pale but beautiful creature stepped bwtween two large trees into the shining river and soon disappeared below the surface. Evilyn kicked off the bottom of the river and shot towards the surface of the Nymph woods. She gazed around the wood, expecting to see faces of other creatures, but she saw none.
With a sigh, Evilyn began to kick her way towards the shore. The thin black garment she wore clung to her water-soaked body as she stepped out of the river. It didn't really matter to her seeing as how no one was around. Evilyn shook the water drops from her long shiney and sleek black hair.
Finding a rock, the Naiad decided to dangle her feet in the cool water and moon-bathe. Her glistning black eyes reflected the star-speckled sky. "Such a curious thing," she said to no one in particular, "that the worst in creatures comes with the night, and day brings out the righteous. I prefer darkness myself..."

"That is a pity," came a voice in answer, "considering the sun does not shine and the stream does not sing at night." With an acrobatic dolphin flip, the owner of the voice came out of his hiding in the river and landed on the soft grassy turf. His appearance was startlingly like that of a statue. His hair was purely sea-blue, his eyes were the color of his hair, and his face was sculpted beautifully.
As the figure was a Spirit, he wore no clothes, for Spirits and Nymphs did not usually wear clothes, finding them to be a symbol of shame. His body was pale and slender, but he had rigidly carved muscles in his body. Lastly were his flippers, which stuck out from his wrists, perfect for moving through the water.
"The wood is more beautiful when the river sings. I am Aquaticus, Prince of the River."

The voice startled Evilyn into nearly falling off the rock she was sitting on. As the spirit emerged from the water unclothed, she cocked an arched eyebrow. He clearly didn't have much to hide. Evilyn's blue facial tattoos glittered in the moonlight; set off by the red in her cheeks. Evilyn slid off the rock and dipped into a slight curtsy, allowing her hair to cover her face slightly. "Greetings, prince of the river. I did not notice you there. I am Evilyn, but you may call me Evie."
The nymph took in every inch of the prince with her solid black eyes. She had never seen royalty before, and he was breathtaking. Spirits and Nymphs have always been known to be beautiful creatures, but Evilyn had never had the confidence to be compleately nude as most others did.

The Prince had been raised to be inquisitive and to question his surroundings. After all, everything in the Nymph Woods would one day be divided between him and the Prince of the Trees. Yet this kind of Nymph was strange. She was far more different. Instead of the usual pale skin with aquatic markings of a Naiad, or the occassional brown skin and leafy markings of a Dryad, she seemed to have black, slippery flesh. It was the first time he had ever seen such a thing.
"Greetings Evie. You are quite a questionable Nymph," he said in return, the sounds of water echoing in his voice. "Never before have I seen one with skin such as you. Your face is that of a Naiad, yet your body is unlike that of a Dryad or a Naiad."
Evilyn was confused. She compared her unblemished skin to his own, and found little difference aside from the tattooing done around Evilyn's face and neck and other places her clothing hid from sight. Her skin was much like his, only hidden.
It was then that she understood; he expected her to be unclothed like other nymphs. He had probably never seen human modesty before. "My apologies, prince, but my skin is indeed like yours, it is only that I choose to hide mine." Evilyn pulled back a long sleeve to show her pale milky skin marred by years of tribal tattooing below the garment. "I suppose it is a fault of not being raised among my own kind. My "parents" were not my true parents, neither were they nymphs. They didn't even know I was until...."
Evilyn broke off the sentence. She didn't know the prince all that well, and did not know how he would react to the fact that Evilyn had been raised in the human world, far from other nymphs. She wondered if he had ever even seen inked skin before...

The Prince of the River was now confused. The nymph before him had shown him something he had never seen before in any creature. As he had known since the day he came from the river bed, the world of the Nymph Woods would be his domain. That very dimension was all he had ever seen, and the only things he had ever seen were the native beings of that dimension.
And the idea of hiding oneself was something totally out of the ordinary.
"Your foster parents weren't nymphs? And they taught you to wear fake skin? What kind of fish would ever do that? Or, were you raised by birds? Do they wear something over their feathers now? Or are those Satyrs up to something now?" His ignorance was to be understood. Satyrs, Birds, and Fish were truly the only creatures apart from the Spirinymphs that lived in the dimension where the Nymph Woods existed.

Evilyn giggled to herself from amusement. Of course the prince didn't understand, he had probably spent his entire life here. she thought to herself. "No, they weren't nymphs. Nor birds, nor satyrs. They were....human. I was found outside of this dimesion on the other side of the shinning river as a child. I'm afraid I know very little about my own heritage and people. I don't even know if I have any siblings...." Evilyn's black eyes sparkled in the moonlight. She was afraid of what the prince would think of her being raised in the outside world.

Now the Prince was even more confused. One cannot truly blame him - after all, the concept of 'dimensions' and 'humans' had come into his education just as much as the idea would've come to you if you had never taken a science class. Yet three things made it clear. She came from the trees on the other bank of the river, and she didn't know who her parents were. "Well I'm not quite sure what a human is, and I've actually never been to the wood over there." He pointed to the other bank of the river. "But if they force their children to wear uncomfortable things like that when you're quite fine without them, then I certainly don't want to go there."
A bit of sympathy came into the Prince's heart at the concept of not knowing about the heritage of the Nymphs, or her own family. This was something the Prince knew about. "Heritage of our people? Well, I can help you with that. They say that we, the Naiads of the River, are long time descendants from The Old Man of the Sea. The Sea is supposedly an endless river which our river pours into at the end of the Wood." He said all of this in a very excited tone. "As for who your family is, if you are a Naiad then your Father is the River King. For the River King is the father of all the Naiads in the River, just as his brother, Quercus Modus, is the father of all the Dryads in the trees."
"Well then, prince, it seems we are brother and sister if that is so. And as for the other side of the shinning river....it is not a pleasant place. Be glad you haven't seen that world. It is quite different from the peace and calm of the nymph woods." Evilyn began to feel more and more calm talking to the prince. She decided it might be considerate to make the prince feel more comfortable as well. She began to walk into the river. When she was about waist length, she dissapeared below the surface. When she arose once more, her "black skin" was floating next to her. She did, however, remain crouched so that only her sholders were showing. Her blue tattooed wings stretched over her sholders, and seemed to move and sparkle.
Ananda watched the two naiads with much interest. As a maember of the Unseelie Court, she had been often forced to don the uncomfortable garb that humans wore. Presently, she was sitting nude astride her kelpie, Skullwhite. She could sense his fatigue and desire to rejoin the river, so she dis mounted and led him to the edge of the stream. She rubbed his muzzle with her nose before unbridling him and releasing him into the water.
"Hello there. I'm Ananda." She pointed to a young ash tree growing on the bank of the river. "That's me too," she laughed.
Evilyn turned quickly at the sound of another person. A dryad...Evie had never seen a dryad before. She noted the slight differences in appearance quickly, but also noticed that the dryad was nude as well. She supposed that within the nymph woods, clothing was uncommon. She kicked back through the water closer to the prince. The nymph's companion; it appeared to be much like a human horse, and Evie had never liked horses.

"Mind not the kelpie, He is much fatigued. He shall fall asleep and disappear in a moment." as if to prove the truth of her statement, Skullwhite vanished. "He has been warned not to touch those of the Faerie, like us, except me. I try to keep him content with the animals of the forest, but mortals are better off staying away from this stream."
Ananda noticed the naiad's tatoos. "What ist thy name? Wherefore be your skin marked so? Art thou of the Courts?" She realized she'd rattled these off too fast for anyknd of response. "Forgive me my inquisition. If my questions offend, do not feel obligated to answer."bg
Evie was startled to see the truth in the girls words. She had never seen a kelpie before and was not aware of its mystical properties. "You do not offend at all. I am not of these "courts" that you speak of. I recieved my marks in the human world. My name is Evilyn."

Ananda smiled, she could see the honesty and good character of the little naiad. She thought it funny how startled the girl was at her kelpie. Since they were both creatures of the water, she thought that Evilyn should have come across one before. When she heard that Evilyn had not only been to the human world, but had actually interacted with them, it was her turn to be startled.
"Thou hast been to the lands of the mortals? What didst thou encounter there? Didst thou have many adventures? Wherefore did you suffer them to make such marks upon your skin?" She again realized she was asking question too quickly to be answered, and she laughed, "Please forgive my rudeness."bg
"The mortals did not give me my marks as punishment. They are a form of art which I asked for. The world of mortals is very....unique. Humans hide their emotions from eachother, something I cannot stand. That is why I left there. I only return to the shining river once in a great while."
