Nadia had to get some good grades or she was going to flunk all her classes. It was totally time to get like serious. And she had planned to totally like rock at potions yesterday, but she had gotten two letters from her parents (one from each of them), that had her hella bummed. She had written them each separately about the fact that she was super bad at magic (and it had been a confession of sorts, since she had never told her father that she was even a witch before), and she was kinda begging to come home since she sucked so bad, and would they totally mind if she just like got a muggle GED and went to community college for a while?
And both of her parents had written her back right away. Nadia had always known they loved her, which is why she felt comfortable telling them important stuff like this. She knew they would want to help. But when she had opened the letters, she had been so mad she locked herself in her room for the rest of the day.
Her mother's letter had been:
And her dad's letter was even worse:
Both of her parents were squibs‽
Both of them had assumed the other one was a muggle‽
And neither one had thought to say anything‽
Fine. They could be jerky stupidheads all they wanted. Nadia didn't want anything to do with any of them. And Dad, how could he conceal something this big from her for years and then insist that he was hurt by her secrecy‽ How many times can Nadia's writer use an interrobang in this post‽
Anyway, after wasting a whole day crying her eyes out over the lying jerks that gave birth to her, she really had to do the potions homework, and since she was so freakin sucky at magic anyway (genetically, even), she didn't want to chance blowing the school up.
Without thinking about it, she totally headed into the woods. Maybe Cyan's prediction was right. Even just thinking about quitting magic had made something awful happen. If she really did give it up for good, she might just die after all.

Her mother's letter had been:
My Nadia,
Don't worry about not being especially talented in magic. I had hoped I'd never have to tell you this, but I was born into a magical family. Unfortunately, I showed no sign of magical talent, and I eventually cut ties with my family after I married your father.
When your father and I split up, I hoped that you too had been born without magic. I just couldn't stand to lose you to a world I had been denied and secretly always envied. When you showed talent, however, I had to put aside my own feeling and send you to school, to see if that was something you wanted to pursue.
Know that whatever you decide, I will be proud of you. I only want you to be happy. Sleep on it, honey, and see how you really feel. If you want, I can have you tutored to earn your GED as soon as you get home, or you can take a month or two to yourself.
We haven't been down to the beach house in ages. Just saying.
Love you forever,
Mom
And her dad's letter was even worse:
Nadia,
I thought you might have inherited magical abilities from my family. Although I'm a squib, my family has been wizards for generations. How could you not tell me about all this before? I know it must have seemed like I would never understand, but I do sweetie. If you had come to me before, this could have been such an adventure for us! Anyway, you do what feels best for you. You're the only one who can decide this.
Next week, I'll be filming in Africa, so I won't be able to get any of your letters. Sorry kiddo. I'll find something nice for you.
