"A bright sunny day, perfect for dueling, I say!" Sylph verbalized to herself as she advanced onto the dueling field. The time was a little before three in the afternoon and it was, indeed, sunny. It was also rather humid, but Sylph figured this was as good as it was going to get in terms of weather.
The Headmistress gazed onto the dueling field and smiled to her self with a smug look of satisfaction. Sylph had told two bickering newcomers that they would be sorting out their issues on the dueling field as opposed to serving an actual punishment. This seemed like the most fitting solution. She would just let those two solve it themselves and just make sure no one got killed.
Sylph wore her typical teaching garb. Her purple hair was tied back, she wore a white tank top and an old pair of jeans today. Not only was this outfit cooler, it was much more comfortable than those robes they had to wear. Sylph sat down on a set of bleachers and waited for the students to arrive.
She had also invited Talon out to watch the duel if he could. She knew he liked watching his students in action. However, with how busy he had been with paperwork, and the like, she figured it wasn't likely he would show.

The Headmaster strolled out onto the field with a pleasant expression on his face. The Spanish summer soaking into his skin was refreshing after so many hours trapped in his office, dealing with the innumerable pressures of running a school smack in the center of a political warzone. Considering all the stress in Talon's life, when Sylph had made the friendly offer for him to come watch two of his students duel it out as punishment for misbehavior, the Headmaster found it impossible to refuse.
"Good afternoon, Sylph," Talon said with a broad smile, taking a seat next to her on the bleachers. Compared to his lightly dressed colleague in muggle clothes, the Headmaster looked ready to melt into the grass. Despite the weather, Talon continued to wear his long robes, their purple color only slightly darker than the Deputy Headmistress's hair. Though they seemed of a lighter fabric than the heavy ones he wore in winter, the only skin showing on the Headmaster was his face and hands.
"I'm interested to see these two firebrands you've summoned," the Headmaster said in conversation, "I didn't recognize their names."

Layne had spent most of the evening before reading. After she'd stormed from the feasting hall, she'd stormed straight up to the library where she'd checked out a few volumes on dueling and offensive spells. She'd even managed to get to bed at a decent hour so she wouldn't be exhausted today. This morning, she'd locked herself in an empty classroom to practice, and as good as it had felt to hex the cushions she'd conjured for the occasion, she still couldn't wait to see the look on Jasper's fucking face when she beat his ass.
She headed out to the dueling field when it got close enough to the appointed time. No need to show up early and look too eager, best to appear unconcerned with the whole thing. Let him be the one to get overconfident. So, when Layne got there, it was just a few seconds ofter three o'clock. "Hey! Professor Plum!" Layne's tone was uncommonly cheerful. "Who's your friend? Does he teach here too? Because, gotta say, he's fucking gorgeous. I'd tap that."

"Classy as Always" came a voice from behind her. Out of the doorway strolled Jasper in thin fabric pitch black robes with the only color being on the Ravenclaw crest on his breast. He smiled to the teacher "Many thanks for this chance." He said to the teacher and he walked toward the spot that was chosen for the duel. He stopped and looked toward Talon and bowed lightly "Greetings" He said to him and drew his wand, keeping it pointed down.
He too had spent the last day studying his ass off. He had pulled out his best books and had read them cover to cover and had used a few practice spells. He was already good with a shield charm, when you were a smart person you were the target for bullies, so defense came naturally to him.
He bowed to Layne and he smirked and spoke up to her "This will be a pleasure" His voice was calm but his eyes danced. "I will say ladies first" He said and his hand relaxed into a natural state, easily able to move without the stiffness of his muscles.DERP!
Sylph had been examining a centipede crawling on the bench as a blur of purple and mess of golden blonde hair approached. It was Talon! Sylph's eyebrow immediately raised in a surprised fashion, then transformed into one of sarcasm. "By all the... Talon!" Sylph greeted the headmaster with a friendly hug. "I'm glad to see you out in the sun, finally. You look like a bloody vampire." The Deputy Headmistress grinned and turned toward the castle, "We're waiting for Jasper Corilec, a smart-mouthed Ravenclaw, and Layne Larkin, a Slytherin with a temper more combustible than Phugsius Charadus'." Sylph turned back to Talon for a moment with a concerned expression. "Speaking of our fiery tempered friend, did Phugsius leave the school and not tell anyone? No one has seen him for months. I figured you might have come across his resignation paperwork at some point or another."
It was then that Layne Larkin made her way onto the dueling field blabbering on with ALL sorts of formality and subtle nuances when it came to social tact, "Layne... My name is Sylph O'Dell, Sylph is as far as informality will be approved of. This man to my right is Talon Windwaltz the Headmaster of the school." Sylph put an abnormal amount of emphasis on Talon's position because hopefully it might prod her to use at least a somewhat more respectful tone. To Layne's other comment Sylph just put face to palm, "Dear, the headmaster is not available to "hit". I'd watch myself around the school nurse if I were you" an agonized smile crossed Sylphs lips.
Jasper then appeared on the scene and was all business. "Good afternoon, Jasper. Let's grab our griffins, shall we?" Sylph loved that expression for many reasons. The headmistress rose from the bleachers and walked between the two duelists.
"Here are the rules if they weren't already obvious: No unforgivables, and no spells that will permanently hurt your opponent, 'hurt' does not exclude death," Sylph gave as an added side note, "also, there will be no physical fighting or shots below the belt. I will personally interfere if these rules are broken." Raising her hand in the air, Sylph smiled at each combatant. "Alright you two, have at it!" Dropping her hand, Sylph backed away from the fight and stood with her arms crossed, her wand tucked neatly into her jean pocket.

"Phugsius has gone missing?" Talon said inquisitively, a look of concern etched upon his features, "I haven't heard anything about this..." Fortunately for the two schoolmasters, the stressful moment was broken by the appearance of the Slytherin that Sylph introduced as Layne Larkin. The Headmaster chuckled quietly at the Slytherin's obnoxious comment, and when Sylph introduced him, Talon merely smiled calmly.
Then the Ravenclaw, Jasper Corilec, arrived in a much more civil manner, bowing to the Headmaster. The Headmaster likewise bowed his head in response to the student, and then watched as Sylph declared the rules and prepared the way for the wizard's duel.
Talon then remained seated, calmly, waiting for the duel to begin.

Layne smiled widely at Talon. So, he had a thing for nurses, did he? Unfortunately, this line of thought was interrupted by none other than the asshole Bird she was supposed to duel. Layne glowered at him as Professor Plum recited the rules. Stupid fucking boy. Always had to ruin everything, didn't he? As Professor Plum slipped back to the sideslines, birdie gave her an opening she hadn't expected.
"Tarantallegra! Rictusempra!" Layne shot the two spells at the Ravenclaw, one after the other. "Didn't think you'd be so gallant, Bird Boy. Remind me to thank you after I win." As she spoke, she flicked her wand again, casting and holding a shield charm. Jasper wasn't about to catch her unawares.32

Jasper had expected a fast match but two spells in a few seconds was impressive. He shifted to the right moving out of the line of fire for the Tarantallegra spell. His shield charm was cast silently, it was covering his wand and the immediate area of his hand. He deflected the second spell into the air over head. He smirked as he moved his hand from his deflection down he shouted out "Avis!" he called out the wand springing to life.
Out of the wand came a sound like none other. The sound of dozens of wings. From the tip flew what seemed like a stream of brown motion and he was laughing lightly. The intent was an attack not a display so the manifestation of the spell was suiting the situation. Dozens of small four inch long brown birds flew from the wand and directly at Layne. The difference of this spell to the others were that the birds could see their target and fly to meet it not a simple light of sight attack. "Dodge that" He commented as he flicked his wand again "Accio Wand!" He called, calling for her wand to disarm her hoping her grip would lighten out of bewilderment of the flock of brown birds that would by then be swarming all around her.

Jasper was such a "Fucking bastard!" This expletive was mostly to herself, as she saw the birds pour forth from his wand. Layne had expected the disarming. She'd 'persuaded' another Birdie into casting a gripping charm on her wand, in case of an accio or an expelliarmus. The birds, however, had to be dealt with. "Avis Exumai," she intoned, forcing the flock back towards their creator, and giving herself some breathing room. "Avifors!" She shouted, and the flock of brown feathers was transformed into stone birds which started raining from the sky over Jasper's head.
While he dealt with not getting knocked on the head by a piece of stone, she whispered, "Immobulus." She wasn't good enough for silent casting yet, but she recognized the value of not letting the enemy know what you were up to. It was the only reason she hadn't cast a langlock yet. If she'd been going up against someone her own age or younger, someone incapable of silent casting, that might have been her opening move. As it was, she watched Bird Boy for the first sign of movement. If she wasn't careful, he might just gain the advantage.

Jasper was again impressed she knew such counters and was not only able to use them but to use them so rapidly. He would have found it amusing under any circumstance but the one he found himself in. Stone birds flying at him followed closely by a spell, one he would not like to be hit with.
The answer was simple, levitation was all he needed. Casting the spell silently but quickly he lifted off the ground and flew high over the stones and the spell by simply silent casting 'Ascendio'. Now he had a unique position in this duel, the high ground as it was. He mentally cast a Flipendo curse more commonly known as the knock back curse. it was aimed for her head, it wouldn't do more then feel like someone shoving. He dropped to the ground by ending the Ascendio curse as he he landed he launched an Immobulus of his own. He hoped the flipendo would distract her so that the spell could hit its target.DERP!

Layne watched as Jasper rocketed skyward. Fuck. She should have known that dueling a seventh year would be harder than she thought. Nothing she did seemed to touch him. As rapidly as she was casting spells, he seemed more than able to launch his own counters and attacks. No matter, Layne would handle this, like she handled everything else, by cursing a lot and letting her temper guide her actions. It was a strategy that worked for her so far. too bad her idea to diffindo his balls off would be breaking two of the rules. They'd take the win away from her if she even tried it.
As it was, she didn't even have to cast descendo to get him to come down. She felt the effects of his flipendo as it knocked her backwards, but she did manage to avoid the immobulus. And, she was pissed. She let out a stream of curses and hexes one right after the other: Jelly-legs. Stinging Hex. Bat-bogey. Babbling Curse. Revulsion Jinx. "Confringo. Furnunculus. Densaugeo. Impedimenta. Stupify. Confundo. Incarcerous."
She stopped herself before she accidentally cast a sectumsempra. No need for that at the moment. the last thing she wanted was to get in trouble. She was having too much fun at the moment. Let's see the smartass block or evade all of those. Even if Layne didn't end up winning this duel, she'd be damned if she made it too fucking easy on the bastard.45

This time Jasper was not impressed she was just launching curses so fast she had no time to think of what she was doing. Yes he had managed to avoid the first but the stinging hex had hit his left arm and left it welted. Mentally he was grateful for whichever teacher had taught him Protego Totalum, a small bubble shield that protected a small area from weak spells. Cast with such speed and frustration and all of them fairly minor spells he had to only move out of the way of only a few that pushed through. "Not bad" He muttered but he was only being polite, that many spells so fast meant she was frustrated.
He calmly leveled his wand to her "Sure you don't want to just give up?" He asked smiling a little. He had a plan but he also didn't want to get as frustrated and do something he would come to regret later. "Where did you learn some of those, they are beyond fourth year, if you just learned them for our duel then we should duel more often." He teased but meant it.

"Shut the fuck up, Bird Boy. This is a duel, not social hour." Still, Layne was glad of the opportunity to take a quick breath and cast a few protective spells under in the faintest of whispers. "But, you know, I can totally accept your surrender, if that's what you meant. I know you've got to be pretty embarrassed, losing to a little girl like me. Pansy ass." Layne was intentionally trying to piss him off, which was actually helping her own mood. She was also moving her wand as she spoke, in the hopes that the steady movement would disguise the slug-vomiting charm she cast at him, once again as she said the words so that they were barely audible, even to her. She put a lot of force behind this charm, hoping that it might pire whatever shields he might have raised.32

He was disappointed in her, she had done so well but she was forgetting the first lesson of spell casting. Speak loud and clear, and pronounce your incantations because either they will be to weak o work or they could backfire. His prior cast shield easily deflected the slug vomiting curse and he shook his head disgusted.
"Well that will teach me to be nice" He said then he smirked "Alright little girl, time to begin wrapping this nice work out up." He said and he re leveled his wand at her. His hand had dropped some from the weak spell, disappointment had got to his concentration. "Flipendo!" He called out his first vocal spell. The spell was strong enough that he was sure with her muttered casting it would damage her shield enough for him to silently cast 'Silenco!' after he finished the first vocal spell. That was the joy of silent casting, you could combo spells so effectively.
The goal was simple whatever weak shield her muttering had caused would be damaged or broken by his Flipendo and the Silence charm would break through or pass through the shield less defense of the girl and prevent her from speaking any more spells. Of course this would require some luck, but hopefully she would be to busy relying on her shield to prep for any underlying attack.
Sylph had stood in the same place throughout the entire duel and every once in awhile she brought her finger up to her lips in an analytical fashion. As much as they let off a facade of confidence The Headmistress could tell that they were both a little worried. They were doing well though.
Both students seemed very apt at defending themselves which was a valuable skill in this place. You never knew when you might run into a lycan or vampire. This of course started Sylph upon another line of thought. The lull in recent activity at Firefox also seemed to be effecting both of the nearby clans. There hadn't been any major activity from what Sylph had heard from Drakborough.
Sylph's complete attention was brought back to the duel as stone birds started raining down on Jasper. That might have been a violation of the rules, but Sylph wasn't about to stop the two eager beavers unless it was serious. "Survival of the fittest" wasn't it?
The purple-haired witch watched intently now waiting for the first hit. There it was. He had been hit by a stinging curse. That was a rather minor curse. Jasper would still be able to fight with a welt or two.
Maybe it was time to up the ante a little bit. They were in wizard society after all. A few broken limbs wouldn't hurt anyone, permanently. "Hey, kids, it's okay if you use some of the more powerful spells if you know them. We have a top-rate nurse after all." The headmistress turned back to Talon for a moment and gave him a wink and then turned back to the fighting students. "Perhaps if I let you two unleash a little bit more we'll end this stalemate." Sylph smiled and let the duel continue.
