Maggie felt a twinge of satisfaction as Phugsius was uprooted from his burrow by her spell looking like a bog beast. It didn't even matter that her spell on Anil hadn't worked. The man was struggling with the terrain and she had intended and so she let it do its work. When he hadn't apparated away after hitting his head she knew she had beaten him. The ex-Auror had cornered and beaten too many wizards in her career to not recognize the signs of a victory. So as she kept him in the corner of her eye her attention focused instead to Phugsius who had undone her spell and was now facing her down.
At first when his hand moved to throw down the wand she had tensed up like a spring thinking he was on the attack. Then instead it stuck in the mud and she felt the high adrenaline rush of the battle finally begin to break. Without his wand he was no threat to her. If he could have apparated he would have, not dug a hole or gotten himself buried. And she still was unaware of the extent of his fire powers. As he began to spout words at her the witch's spare hand drifted towards her belt. It holstered Anil's wand in a loop and began to search for something else. Long fingers brushed over the holster of her gun to another tool she kept handy.
"Who did she murder that was so important?"
Her face darkened at that phrase. To Maggie every magical being was important until they stood between her and a monster. It was an innocent student that had been murdered by this beast and it was her superior that was nearly killed as well. What did this boy know? As much as she wanted to respond to his banter Maggie wasn't stupid. Talking was a distraction and this was neither the time or place. The heat of anger was not something she let take over her head and make her desert her duty.
"This isn't the time to talk boy, I will answer all of your questions and you will answer some of mine back at lockup. You are under arrest - " Maggie's voice cut off as her attention whirled towards the sound of a creaking tree. As her hand had been removed handcuffs from her belt her attention had wavered just long enough for Anil to get himself pinned under a tree. "Shit!" Maggie uttered under her breath and threw herself back into the action. "Accio wand!" With a mere flick of her wrist she took another wand into custody and tucked it next to Anil's.
Then with an air popping crack Maggie had apparated behind Phugsius. Ankle deep in softening mud she quickly latched a pair of handcuffs on his wrist. "You are under arrest for interfering in an investigation of the Black Forest Church." Her voice moved rapidly and her hands were quick as they made sure the handcuffs were secure. One of the wonderful things about working for the Church was how they used both muggle and magical technology to find and apprehend monsters. Sometimes those two technologies would be combined. These cuffs were an example of the marriage of muggle and magical. Their mechanism was purely muggle in their design and from first glance they would look like plain handcuffs. However these were made of silver for the capture of lycans and were imbued with a full-body bind curse. Maggie's favorite part was the button on the right cuff which when pressed activated a portkey to the processing area at the jail. It saved her a lot of time. As soon as they were latched onto Phugsius she activated that portkey and send him off.
Wasting no time Maggie apparated again before she sank into the mud, this time over to Anil's side. Dark eyes surveyed the tree and her victim. Anil had been badly hurt which was not her intention at this time. However luckily for him the tree had avoided his chest and instead was crushing the lower half of his body. There was a wrinkle in her brow as she rapidly analyzed the situation. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Carefully Maggie directed the the tree off of his body and dropped it into the bog with a loud squelch. Her eyes avoided the lower half of Anil's body as she crouched down next to him to wrap her fingers around his lower arm. For a brief moment her eyes took in the spreading bruise on his face and the blood slowly trickling down it. This man was going to be two times lucky this day, this time that he was not a beast and that the Church valued magical beings. Phugsius was sent directly to lockup. As Maggie apparated away with Anil she took him instead to the medical ward at the Church.
There the skilled Healers could relieve him of his injuries. At least, they could heal enough so he could talk with Maggie and give her exactly what she was looking for.
